Overview
Life changes — bereavement, separation, losing a job, failing an exam, a serious diagnosis, moving abroad or returning — demand adjustment. Sometimes the reaction overwhelms coping: mood drops, anxiety spikes, sleep and work suffer, out of proportion to what the person feels they 'should' feel. Clinicians call this an adjustment disorder. It is one of the most common reasons people first seek mental-health help, it is nobody's weakness, and the outlook is good: as the situation resolves or the person adapts, symptoms usually settle — therapy can speed and support that process.

Causes & risk factors
The cause is the stressor itself combined with personal vulnerability: the meaning of the event to the person, previous experiences, current support, and other pressures running at the same time. The same event — job loss, for example — can produce a mild reaction in one season of life and an overwhelming one in another. That difference is context, not character.
How it is diagnosed
A clinician identifies a clear stressor, symptoms beginning within about three months of it, and distress or impairment beyond what the situation alone would usually explain — while checking the picture is not better explained by depression, anxiety disorders, grief or PTSD. The types are described by their main colour: with depressed mood, with anxiety, with mixed features, or with behaviour changes.
Treatment options
Supportive, practical therapy is the main treatment: making sense of the reaction, problem-solving the parts of the situation that can change, rebuilding routine and sleep, and strengthening support. It is usually time-limited — weeks to a few months. There is no specific medicine for adjustment disorder; a clinician may treat severe anxiety or sleep problems briefly, or treat depression if that is what the picture becomes.
Living with it — self-care
While adjusting: shrink life to the essentials and do them well — sleep, food, movement, one task at a time. Talk to people who know the situation. Postpone big irreversible decisions where you can. Mark progress in weeks, not days. And take the reaction seriously without pathologising yourself: struggling after a hard event is human; the diagnosis simply means support is warranted.
When to seek help urgently
Seek help promptly if the reaction includes hopelessness, inability to care for yourself or dependents, heavy substance use, or any thoughts of self-harm.
Myth vs fact
Myth: An adjustment disorder is just overreacting to life.
Fact: The reaction is real, common and impairing — and recognising it matters because support and short therapy work well, especially early. Dismissing it delays recovery.
